It is a word that has become synonymous with Kittery, Maine for locals and visitors alike. Yes, a large portion of U.S. Route 1 is surrounded by hundreds of outlet stores from some of the words top retailers.
But, the town is much more than just a giant plaza for folks to come and purchase their hard earned dollars.

Kittery is the "Gateway to Maine," right across the Maine/New Hampshire border off Interstate 95 and is home to the renowned Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on Seavey Island and includes Badger Island and a portion of the Isles of Shoals.

Incorporated in 1647, the town of Kittery is billed as ?the oldest incorporated town in Maine.? During its early years, Kittery was best known as a port of trade and shipbuilding. Some of the first vessels of the U.S. Navy were constructed on Badger?s Island during the Revolutionary War; among them, the U.S.S. Ranger famously captained by John Paul Jones. Two parks, Fort McClary and Fort Foster, offer visitors the opportunity to glimpse into the area's military past and enjoy some gorgeous harbor views.Today Fort Foster is the site of Kittery's enormously popular summer Seaside Festival.

The area offers a number of options in terms of accommodations as well as numerous choices for dining, with seafood being a natural specialty. From Kittery, there is easy access to much of the Maine?s southern coastline.

And then there is, of course, the shopping. More than 120 outlet stores offer visitors from the world over the opportunity to save money from exceptional deals on nationally known brands such as J. Crew, Coach and Tumi.
